Money Talks About Financing Home Improvement

If you are considering making improvements to your home, you will likely have to search for different ways to finance your home improvement. Although home improvement may increase the value of your home greatly, it can also cost a lot of money. You should carefully consider your source of funds for home improvement, as you may not wish to use money that you have available, and use other sources of funds instead.

You can, of course, use the money that you have saved in your personal bank account to finance your home improvement. However, your bank should be paying you at least five percent interest on the money you have in your deposit. Certain banks such as Citibank or HSBC offer customers the option of opening online savings accounts as well.

If you have a good line of credit, then you can consider obtaining a zero percent interest credit card in order to finance your home improvement. This possibility is only feasible if your home improvement project is a small one and your line of credit is very great, so that you can easily pay back the money you borrow without having to pay interest over the course of a year. Some credit cards also offer online payments.

You must be aware that the interest payments are not tax deductible if you decide to use a credit card to finance your home improvement. For this reason, a card that has zero interest is particularly desirable.

Larger home improvement projects, however, will require other methods of financing as credit cards will not be able to support the large amount of money required for large projects. You can choose to obtain a line of home equity credit using your home as collateral, and your interest payments will be tax deductible. Different banks offer different interest rates for this type of loan and you can find the information on their online websites.

Another possibility for financing your home improvement is refinancing your home. If your home possesses a larger amount of equity, then refinancing can help you lower the interest rate of your mortgage, which will give your home greater equity with which to plan the financing of your home improvement.

You can also choose to obtain a second mortgage on your home in order to lower the interest rate you are paying for your home. For this tot be effective, however, the interest rate on your first mortgage must be lower than that on the second mortgage.

You should also be aware that you will not be able to finance your home improvement through your 401(k) plan. In order to obtain a distribution from your plan, you must be over sixty years of age. If you are not above sixty years of age, you will have to pay tax and a heavy penalty of ten percent in order to withdraw from your 401(k) plan. You will even have to repay the money borrowed along with a high rate of interest, and your 401(k) plan will cease to grow until you have fully repaid the borrowed amount.

These are several suggestions that you may consider to finance your home improvement, but the method that you eventually choose to finance your home improvement should be based on your financial situation and the nature of your home improvement project. Home improvement financing is just one of many financial matters discussed on Money Talks.
