Money Talks About New Car Financing

Buying a new car is always an exciting prospect, although financing a new car can be a challenge. A recent segment on Money Talks reviewed the financing options that you can consider for a new car. Here are a few idea:

You should consider approaching a local bank or credit union for help with financing your new car. They will have various financial plans that you may be interested in. Each bank and credit union will have its own level of interest rate, however, and you may wish to pay more attention to credit unions as they usually have lower interest rates than banks.

You should also understand the process by which interest rates are determined. Both banks and credit unions use a common process in determining interest rates. First, they check your credit report in order to determine the health of your credit history, which includes such things as paying your bills and not being late in making your payments. If you have a higher credit rating, you will enjoy substantially lower interest rates on your new car than if you have a questionable credit history. If you have declared bankruptcy before then you will suffer even higher interest rates.

Certain longer-term financing plans are also available from certain financial groups. A longer payment plan will reduce the amount that you have to repay each month, but the total interest that you pay on the loan will be greater. Repaying your loan in a shorter time period means larger monthly payments but a smaller overall interest amount.

You should base the length of your financing plan on the length of time that you plan to own your car. You would not want to be paying for a car that you no longer own, so you should plan your payments such that you are only paying for the car while you are using it.

Another possible method of financing your new car that you can consider is obtaining a home equity loan. If you have paid off a large amount of the mortgage on your home, then you have built up considerable home equity and can use this equity to finance your car. The interest on the loan you obtain will be tax deductible and the loan collateral will be your home. You must be cautious, however, because your house will be repossessed if you default on your loan payments.

Finally, you should begin the process of obtaining financing for you new car before you actually purchase you new car, as this will ensure that you purchase a car that is within your means instead of spending money on a car that you really are unable to afford.
